Classification and Applications of Bitumen
Types of Bitumen
Natural Bitumen
Formed naturally due to climate conditions, these bitumen's are used without processing. They vary in composition and properties.
Coal Tar Pitches
Hard, black substances formed through coal tar distillation. They have a shiny surface and melt when heated, with a melting point dependent on the production process.
Petroleum Asphalts/Bitumen
Derived from petroleum, these solid and semi-solid bitumen's are produced through distillation or additional operations like air blowing. They are the most used type, with a wide range of applications.
Applications of Bitumen
- Road Construction Bitumen: Used for coating streets and road construction, this type accounts for around 90% of produced bitumen. It is classified according to its penetration rate, which represents its strength and hardness.
- Building Bitumen: Used for insulation applications, such as roof insulation, this type accounts for around 10% of produced bitumen.
Properties and Uses of Bitumen
- Impenetrable against water: Making it an essential material for various applications.
- Adhesiveness: Enabling it to bond with other materials.

Types of Bitumen Products
Bitumen, a hydrocarbon substance, is classified into three categories based on its generation source: natural, petroleum asphalts, and coal tar pitches. Each type has distinct properties and uses.
Penetration Grade Bitumen
Classified based on its penetration value, which measures its hardness and softness. Used for road construction and maintenance.
Viscosity Grade Bitumen
Classified based on its viscosity, which measures its flowability. Used for road construction, maintenance, and airport runways
Australian Standard Bitumen
Meets the Australian Standard AS 2008 for bitumen. Used for road construction, maintenance, and other infrastructure projects.
Performance Grade Bitumen
Classified based on its performance characteristics, such as temperature and traffic loading. Used for high-performance road construction and maintenance.
Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB)
Blended with polymers to enhance its strength, durability, and resistance to deformation. Used for high-performance road construction, airport runways, and industrial applications.
Cutback Bitumen
Blended with solvents to reduce its viscosity and improve its flowability. Used for road maintenance, primer, and tack coat applications.
Bitumen Emulsions
Blended with water and emulsifiers to create a stable mixture. Used for road construction, maintenance, and primer applications.
Oxidised Bitumen
Blended with oxygen to increase its softening point and durability. Used for roofing, insulation, and waterproofing applications.
Natural Bitumen (Gilsonite)
A natural, asphaltic substance used for drilling fluids, construction, and industrial applications. Offers excellent durability and water resistance.
